Epilogue

It has now been a year since our Amazon river excursion. The trip was an adventure, educational, and exciting. My thoughts return to our catered breakfast in our skiff which was moored deep into the edge of the jungle where we were inundated with a cacophony of bird calls, frogs, insects and angry monkeys.

I also recall how resilient the river people are. Many live in homes built on stilts at the river`s edge. The river homes are often pieces of corrugated tin tied together like condos with shared walls. The river frequently rises many feet during the rainy season so construction flexibility is mandatory.

When we took school supplies to the children they were so appreciative and polite. Many older sisters were caring for their younger siblings which works out because the schools are one room.

Last but not least, I can still see the joy of a family matriarch who was in her 80`s. She sat cross legged on the floor of her one room home surrounded by multi generations. As we laid our gifts in front of her and told her thank you, she was overcome. I am so happy we had this opportunity.

I extend my gratitude to our guide, Ciro, who far exceeded what one thinks of a guide`s duties. He was everything wrapped up in one...care giver, organizer, banker, tour guide, wakeup call maker, trouble shooter, entertainer and much more. We were very lucky to be assigned to Ciro. Daniel was a brilliant naturalist and knew every name of anything we encountered.

It was truly an incredible journey.
