There are villages along the shore of the river varying in size from a few homes to larger ones. The structures along the river`s edge are built on stilts to accommodate the fluctuating water depth. We visited Las Palmas which contained a school and a hospital. That day we had lunch in the home of a family. Our hostess, a 43-year old with nine children, prepared our meal which consisted totally of resources from the rain forest. The main course was fish or pork wrapped in a ginger leaf, tied with palm tree straw and cooked in a bed of coals.
